What do school boards do?
Each school district in Texas has a nonpartisan governing body comprised of 7-9 elected trustees who provide oversight and make macro-level decisions for the district, much like the board of a corporation, foundation, or nonprofit. School boards are NOT involved in day-to-day operations.
How can community members engage?
One of the most important actions community members can take to ensure all students’ success is to engage with their local school board by voting in each election, communicating with sitting trustees, and holding the school board accountable, both to their given responsibilities as well as to decision making that is racially equitable and student-centered.
School boards should represent the values of the community and effectively lead the district toward achieving its goals. It is YOUR role to understand the issues facing your district and advocate for policies and practices that lead to improved student outcomes and a better student experience for all children.
