Fort Worth ISD students celebrate voting for first time

A group of Fort Worth ISD students marched to the polls on Friday to celebrate their first time voting in an election.

Friday was Student Voting Day and a group of Diamond Hill Jarvis High School students helped lead a march to a nearby polling site. Students who are 18-years-old and registered to vote were allowed to take a break from classes to cast a ballot.

The student leaders are a part of the group My Brother's Keeper, a national initiative that began during the Obama administration to positively impact young men of color by addressing their unique challenges. Most said they were happy to get involved in the political process.

“I'm finally getting to speak up for what I want and it's my first time actually voting so I'm excited,” said student Sibrianna Gonzalez.

The students said they want to dispel the narrative that young people do not vote and hope Friday's showing will begin to set a precedent.
