Celebrating Black History Month

As we kick off Black History Month, how do you plan to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans? There are so many ways to celebrate the contributions and leadership of Black people in our country; read books by Black authors, buy from Black-owned businesses, donate to Black organizations, and explore the historical influence of Black scientists, politicians, and artists just to name a few.

One important thing we can do is unlearn and relearn past and current social issues affecting the Black community. One great place to begin or continue this process is with Rachel Cargle's "The Great Unlearn". This year, she has added to her already phenomenal work by rolling out her The Great Unlearn for Young Learners focusing on a different sector each week:

- Week One: Black American Innovators in the Culinary Arts
- Week Two: Black American Innovators in STEAM
- Week Three: Black American Innovators in the Arts
- Week Four: Black American Innovators in Government

Her weekly guide of daily activities for the whole family is full of activities, readings, visuals, and journal prompts to guide the young person in your life through the history and impact of Black people and culture. There are many amazing ways to celebrate Black history, and we encourage you to see this month as just the beginning or a continuation of celebrating Black lives all year long.
