Ask the Experts: Wraparound Services

What is most important for people to know about wraparound services?

“There are no quick fixes nor magic wands to wave when communities have faced decades of mistreatment, neglect, and systematic racism and bigotry. Placed-based interventions often fail because of the assumptions of those leading the charge combined with a deep (and well-earned) mistrust from the community. This work takes time and is successful through relationship building, listening, and creatively approaching complex problems.” - Chris Robey

“Wraparound services are designed to provide comprehensive, individualized support for individuals and families, addressing their unique needs and goals from a holistic perspective. They focus on the person as a whole, not just their specific challenges. Place-based services are an investment in the well-being and vitality of a community as a whole. They recognize that a strong, supportive community benefits everyone.” - Ara Grimaldo Saintus

What is the biggest misconception about wraparound services?

“A huge misconception is that wraparound services are a school's version of 'charity,' as opposed to an investment. Data suggests that schools that teach whole child education and have wraparound services have higher attendance rates, better academic performance, which in turn leads to better outcomes.” - David Umanzar

“One of the biggest misconceptions about wraparound and place-based services is that they are a one-size-fits-all solution. In reality, these services are highly individualized and community-specific. They are designed to address the unique needs and strengths of individuals and communities. Assuming that a single approach will work for everyone or every community can undermine the effectiveness of these services and may not fully meet the diverse and complex needs of those they aim to support.” - Ara Grimaldo Saintus

What are the strongest levers currently being pulled in the area of wraparound services and where do you see areas of untapped potential?

“There is a growing recognition of the importance of involving community members in the design and implementation of services. Community engagement strengthens the sense of ownership and promotes culturally sensitive solutions. There is an opportunity for increased engagement from the private sector in supporting wraparound and place-based services. Companies can play a role in community development and social responsibility efforts.” - Ara Grimaldo Saintus

“The strongest opportunities that are being leveraged in our local schools are those that work in intervention. This is in nearly every category, i.e. providing food, clothing, or crisis response. All great work!” - David Umanzar

How can community members meaningfully engage with wraparound services? What is one call to action?

“Community members need to be at the center of these types of initiatives. Overall, everyone can support these types of organizations and emerging efforts by increasing the visibility of the work, attending events, donating to causes, and inviting community leaders into different spaces. Power is deeply embedded in the work, and it is integral to the much broader challenge of equity in our society and expanding access to economic opportunities in every neighborhood and community.” - Prisma Garcia

“Find a place in your local community that you are passionate about and engage with their leadership about their needs - without an agenda. This could be a school, recreational center, library, neighborhood outreach, or another community stakeholder. Then, just listen. When we approach with curiosity and without answers, we find opportunities to serve and affect change.” - Chris Robey
